The Rhythmic pop artist Taija New has released a new song titled “So Long”. Her talent for harmony is displayed from the opening vocal section of “So Long”, which is exquisitely constructed.
However, what makes So Long better is her talent as a lyricist. Her audience has connected with the song’s highly personal character, which has generated a tremendous amount of discussion on TikTok. The original song will surely help Taija gain the respect she merits.
The Newbian King, also known as Taija New, is a Rhythmic Pop entertainer who modestly started her musical adventure in open mics in Springfield, Massachusetts, where she honed her live performance abilities.
She launched her first EP, Color Me Complex, in 2015, which featured the well-known song Newbian King, which challenges gender stereotypes and bears her nickname. Since then, she has released two additional works, including the eagerly anticipated Heart on the Stage album in 2017, which was followed by a two-year album-titled tour.
Taija New has demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to connect with her audience ever since she first started performing on the Springfield open mic scene. In her latest song, she tells a complicated tale of ambition and betrayal, vividly bringing to life a subject that is all too common.
Taija has been committed to growing as a performer throughout this time, expanding her shows into full live productions that have been seen in North America where she has shared the stage with big names like Jennifer Hudson, Todrick Hall, K. Michelle, and Tiffany Evans.
Despite the difficulties the pandemic provided, she maintained her momentum while in quarantine by releasing her single “Couture”, which was well-liked by both her old and new admirers.
“Body on Revenge”, Taija’s first single from her third solo album, made its premiere in 2022. The single was a cool song that revealed another aspect of her artistic prowess. She is preparing to release her upcoming album, “Unsolicited Material”, following the release of her second song, So Long. - Conversations About Her
Taija New’s “So Long” is a story “about being in a relationship with an opportunist.” I can’t say that I’ve dealt with that over the years, but I certainly see how it’d be a terrible problem. Thankfully, New speaks on breaking ties with this person pretty quickly. I love the harmonies and vocals throughout this one, as it reminds me a bit of a mix between Remy Ma lyrically and a bit of Tamar Braxton vocally. Check it out below and support dope music in all its forms. - Speed on The Beat
Springfield, Massachusetts raised Multi-faceted musician/entertainer Taija New shares the visuals for her song “So Long”, a solemn ballad that dwells on broken love. Over a cinematic string/pad arrangement and sparse drum grooves, Taija shares a tale of dishonesty where she discovered her partner was an opportunist trying to use her for their own gains. Taija holds nothing back and besides venting her frustrations, she also lets the perpetrator know that there is no coming back from this. Armed with her impassioned flow and candid demeanour, she flows effortlessly over the R&B-infused soundscape and gives a solid performance ripe with cold and detailed facts about the ordeal.
Taija New, a.k.a. the Newbian King, is a multi-genre musician who started her musical journey at different open mic nights in her hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts. This is where she honed her live performance skills and her reputation as a skilled performer grew to epic proportions as people spread the news of her talents far and wide. Her debut EP Color Me Complex was released in 2015, followed by performances at The Pride Tour where she was blessed to grace the stage of Pride festivals across the U.S. In, 2017, she released her sophomore album Heart on the Stage followed by an album tour which lasted for 2 years. Taija is currently completing her fourth project and gearing up for her third tour. - The Word Is Bond

Hailing from Springfield, Massachusetts, buzzing artist Taija New a.k.a., The Newbian King has been grinding and turning heads since she officially launched her solo career back in 2015. Her debut EP, “Color Me Complex“, was praised for lead single, “Newbian King“, and quickly helped to push Taija New into artist to watch status back at home. Honing her skills at open mics around town, Taija New continued to build her catalog while perfecting her live performance abilities. Since getting started, Taija New has become an ally and familiar face in the LGBTQ+ community, performing at Pride celebrations around the country while also landing on stages aside acts like Jennifer Hudson, Todrick Hall, K.Michelle, and Tiffany Evans.
Most recently, Taija New has released her new single, “Couture“, produced by NY Bangers on which she displays a fine balance between smooth melodies and hard-hitting bars. About the track, she says, “Being a 90s baby, “Couture” was the song that I always wanted to write and record. As soon as I heard the beat that was produced by NY Bangers, I could not stop my pen from writing; I knew exactly where I was going with the feel for this one. The entire song is about the feeling and vibe it gives you all while bringing across an important message, “I don’t compete to you better not sleep, or you might lose me!” I wanted the ladies to feel the power in their worth!“”
With COVID putting a halt to her scheduled live performances, Taija has been putting her energy into the studio, where she has been steadily racking up tunes to continue her push into 2021. A fearless female MC with a message to be heard, Taija is dead set on making some major waves. Tune in. - ROCKDAFUQOUT
In this new entry in our ‘Diamonds In The Rough’ category, we want to introduce you to upcoming artist Taija New and her brand new single titled “Couture” featuring Juice The DJ.
Being a 90s baby, “Couture” was the song that Taija New always wanted to write and record. As soon as she heard the beat that was produced by NY Bangers, she could not stop her pen from writing; she knew exactly where she was going with the feel for this one. “Couture” was engineered by the incredibly skilled and talented Angelo Quaglia, whose Grammy nominated work has been heard on artists projects such as Joe, Busta Rhymes, 702 and Deborah Cox.
The video was directed by John Hill of Noir Films and Co-directed by Taija New herself. As an artist, festival season is the time you prepare for year-round; it’s the time you perform the most.
“Just before COVID-19 I was beginning to gain traction and have the opportunity to headline at more and more festivals. Because of COVID-19, this has changed the very fabric of live performance. I wanted to capture the essence of what my life as an artist was like before the pandemic and what it is like now with live virtual performances as well as being quarantined.”
She hopes whoever watches the “Couture” video can feel what she’s saying rather than just see it. The entire song is about the feeling and vibe it gives you all while bringing across an important message, “I don’t compete to you better not sleep, or you might lose me!” She wanted the ladies to feel the power in their worth. - Fresh Hip-Hip R&B

A lot of female rappers seem to feel the need to just come out hard and vulgar to maybe match the guys. I noticed so far in your music that has not been the case. What made you decide to keep it clean and forge that path?
Wow! It never gets old when people tell me they notice that. I really believe it wasn’t so much of my decision. I grew up in the 90’s where music artists were cautious about what they put out into the universe for the fans and I soaked that up. To me, it was just part of being an artist; your responsibility to your fans and to the bigger picture which is the future. I don’t want to be 60 years old without timeless music nor (Click link to read full interview) - Ryze-Up Magazine
On Thursday, Boston Pride announced the entertainment lineup for this spring’s 49th annual Boston Pride Festival. Performer Todrick Hall, singer-songwriter Robin S., and house artist Beth Sacks will deliver headline performances during Boston’s annual LGBTQ+ Pride parade and concert taking place on June 8 from noon to 6 p.m. at City Hall Plaza.
Hall — 2019’s main headliner — made it to the semifinals on season 9 of “American Idol,” served as a guest judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and choreographed one of the most iconic Beyoncé flash mobs, filmed in a Target in 2011.
“We are thrilled to host an exciting and diverse group of artists and performers at the 49th Boston Pride Festival,” said Boston Pride concert chair Henry Paquin in a statement. “All of these artists, performers, dancers and DJs reflect this year’s theme of ‘Looking Back, Loving Forward,’ and will be the perfect entertainment for the thousands of people flocking Boston City Hall this year to celebrate equality.”
The festivities on June 8 will also include performances from singer-songwriter Kat Kennedy, band the Spots, quartet All Eyes On Me, rhythmic pop musical artist Taija New, emcee First Lady Sarita, and dance group QWAM, among others. - The Boston Globe
Massachusetts born and raised singer, songwriter and entertainer Taija New has just unveiled her brand new single First Up on Your Last. I am really enjoying the piano-based melody which gives the song an extra dose of emotion and, intertwined with that punchy beat, makes it for quite a beautiful listening experience. Taija's powerful vocals perfectly convey the empowering message of the song that addresses how we should value ourselves in a relationship.
First Up on Your Last is a highly infectious piece of Contemporary R&B with lots of rhythm and an overall chill vibe that makes it perfect for a weekend at home. Watch its accompanying music video below!
Speaking about the song Taija said,
"This by NO means should be misconstrued as a breakup song; this is an ultimatum record. It's about letting your partner know it's a privilege to be with you; not a right. Yes, it's also about knowing your worth and letting them know anyone would be lucky to have you. But more importantly it's about communicating how you feel (OK I admit in a cocky way), waiting a bit longer for them so they can make changes, and also having the courage to walk away if this realization never occurs to them." - Caesar LiveNLoud

Beyond The Lens – Hip Hop artist, songwriter, and dancer Taija New may be new to our front page but if you take some time to check out of her work you’ll feel that it was long overdue. The talented native of Massachusetts has come a long way to develop her brand and she continues to fuel that engine with her awesome team that could be seen destroying stages with creative dance routines during their live performances.
I had the great pleasure in interviewing Taija New after getting in contact with her over messenger to discuss her life coming up as a female musician, what influenced her to do it, and more. I hope you enjoy reading the interview!

Internet Hollywood: Welcome to the Internet Hollywood universe Taija! It’s good that we both were finally able to make time to do our very first interview together. I recently checked out your work and I have to say it’s a bit overwhelming. You create amazing content on your own and when you remix other people songs. Where did your passion for music start and who were some of your main influences?
Taija: Thank you for interviewing me and thank you for noticing all of this because there is so much work that goes into making 2-5 minute songs. I would have to say that my passion for music began when I was really young listening to R&B singers from the 90s and prior. Aaliyah was and always will be my all time favorite because she was just everything to me. I was influenced by Mya, Destiny’s Child, 702, Tamia, Amerie, Monica, Total, TLC, Beyoncé ; I could literally sit here all day naming artists because I listened and learned from them all during that time. My parents and grandparents were always playing music from their time when I was growing up. I absolutely love and learned so much from; artists like the Commodores, Earth, Wind and Fire, Temptations, Hall and Oats, Al Green, Debarge, Switch etc. My mother used to tape music videos from BET to entertain my sister and I. We were always mimicking choreography from them. Just everything about R&B music amazed me. Notice there were a lot of groups that I mentioned for influences. We had a group named Cantaijous pairing our names, Canei and Taija, together. My sister sang lead and I did background vocals. This is how I mastered the creation of harmonies. I would study the background of every song we ever listened to. I wanted to be a singer so badly but recorded myself one day and realized it wasn’t going to work out! Hip-Hop was infused into R&B at that time. Lil Kim, of course, was someone I listened to with verses integrated into songs like “I Can Love You” by Mary J. Blige. Foxy Brown, Da Brat, Missy Elliot, and Left Eye are some of the rappers I grew up listening to as well. That “Ladies Night” video was everything! Pop was huge in the late 90s so I listened to Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, *NSYNC , gosh even Otown! Then, later on, I started listening to a lot of alternative music and just became enamored with the diversity of it all. At this point I was listening to 30 Seconds From Mars, Paramore, Dashboard Confessional, Alexz Johnson, Nickelback was huge at the time, and Avril Lavigne just to name a few. During all of this, I was also learning Spanish which later became my major in college. Prince Royce, Ivy Queen, Aventura, and especially Selena were some of the artists I was learning the language and listening to. If you think about it, I’m really the result of a collage of music. All of this influenced how I write and how I structure a song. I love it all!
Internet Hollywood: Was it a bit hard to be accepted as a female rapper to guy rappers that share the same dream as you?
Taija: I am always asked that question and I honestly have to say, no. From day one they already knew what time of day it was. I believe because I was and still am so hungry. They respect my grind and appreciate me as my own artist. Never once have they questioned if I do this for real. I mean if they did I would just reiterate that I do! But men in the game have always been respectful and supportive about my artistry and I feel so blessed to say that.
Internet Hollywood: Your live performances for songs like ‘working’ are very well thought out and amazingly executed. Not many artists understand the importance of putting on an actual show when they do live performances. When did you start becoming creative with your live performances and was it hard gathering a team and making up the right dance for the song?
Taija: I always say that live performance is the best aspect to my craft. I LOVE performing and connecting with my current and potential fans, the Newbians. There is no feeling like that of being on stage. I was creative right from the beginning. I come from a Hip-Hop dance background because of those music videos our mom had us watch. Before rapping I was doing talent shows in school and lip-sync contest, all from dance. This ended up naturally coming out in my performances. At open mics I would try so many things like having my creative director Myles Jeh, amongst other roles, make mixes for me with dance breaks so I could really put on a show. I was down at open mic cutting up! D. Moss was hosting these at the time and he will tell you I was down there EVERY week with a new costume, choreography, and remix. I was down there when nobody showed up just for practice! The more time went on, the more intricate my shows became and I study many artists, past and present, who are already in the limelight. I get a lot of inspiration from them because I can see myself up there on those same stages. Myles Jeh choreographed worKING I can’t take credit for that one. One thing I love about his work is that it’s so diverse. It’s hard to put him in a box and say “This is what Myles Jeh does” because his style is versatile. I remember learning the piece for worKING and feeling like they are going to love this. My team kind of fell into place without too much effort. Myles Jeh is first and foremost my best friend since middle school. He is a such a talent when it comes to creativity and dance so his contribution is immense. He has his own music career that has been picking up too. Make sure you all check out Myles Jeh! I am such a calculated person that I need to know where I am on stage at all times. Everything is choreographed right down to my regular steps. He knows this and he makes this happen. It’s a collaboration between him and I but majority comes from him. We searched for my other background dancer, Tylor T, who is now one of my choreographers as well. We did an audition in the Western Massachusetts area and came out with 4 dancers, Tylor is the only one left from that group. He stood out during that audition and I remember saying “I got to have him”. I am so happy he came that day because he is so quick and sharp at what he does it’s crazy. He just fit so well with us it was effortless. My DJ, DJ Juice, fell out of the sky! I met him once and the next time I saw him he suggested that we work together. I thought he wanted to do a show or something. He made it clear that he wanted to be part of the team and has been with us ever since. Tyree Brant began coming to shows with Tylor and somehow slowly but surely began taping them. I’m so grateful for him documenting what we do. I’m only one person and I cannot do it all! Everyone has their role in this production and we rehearse hard. Without these guys it wouldn’t be as good; it just wouldn’t. I don’t trust easy so my team grows when I see dedication and just overall understanding of the sacrifice this business takes. But hey growth is growth. I don’t have to try with these guys which makes it all worth it.

Internet Hollywood: Female rappers from all over the world are quickly building a name for themselves now that the Internet has become pretty much a gold rush for independent talent. It clearly provides the tools all artists need to do everything themselves without any mainstream influence. What would you say is the best tools the Internet gave you to make it easier for you as an artist?
Taija: Social media is the best tool by far. The ability to reach people you do not know is insane. Each platform has its own function as well its own own resources to help promote your craft. I was able to truly make a difference in my career when I started exploring, researching and learning how it all works.
Internet Hollywood: Are you currently working on any projects now?
Taija: I am always working on something. I took a break from writing music because I was going through a lot of personal and professional transitions. Now I feel refreshed and brand new so I will be working on my next project very soon. Plus “Heart on the Stage”, the album I released this past November, still has a lot of feats to make worldwide. I am making sure that project gets the correct push as well. I spent so much time perfecting it that I can’t let the work not receive its shine. In the meantime everyone can check out my YouTube Series, “The Newbian King Show” where I discuss my experience in the business and present music. Just go on YouTube, type in “Taija New” and Voila! Make sure y’all subscribe though because videos are uploaded frequently.
Internet Hollywood: Who are some artists that you would like to collaborate with or feature on your next project?
Taija: I don’t have any honestly. I believe they will come in their time. I used to collaborate a lot in the beginning of my career but now I’m so focused on solidifying myself as an artist and strengthening my presence in every song I create. My way of doing this is working solo with tunnel vision. For instance, instead of having a singer sing the hooks that I write I am being selfish at the moment and singing them myself to push the limits of my artistry. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to grow in different ways with music. This is not everyone’s process but it’s mine.
Internet Hollywood: What is your main goal this year and what do you want to focus on the most?
Taija: My goal is to break into the industry this year. Two years ago it was to tour; I did that. Last year it was to begin getting paid for shows which is a direct reflection of our hard work and efforts; I did that. Can you believe we just started getting paid gigs? That is why I love my team so much because they worked hard when there was nothing but potential. But back to the question; this year its to break through and become a household name around the world. That is the goal. I pray I’m able to achieve it.
Internet Hollywood: Last two questions; Is there a time frame on when you want to fulfill your goals, and is there a plan b if you don’t manage to fulfill them?
Taija: I think many things, even from close friends and family, have been assumed about my attitude towards music. Im glad you asked because this question has been brought to me by them specifically. I think they believe I’m naive you know? As a woman I know that claiming your spot in the industry needs to happen sooner than later although there are examples of the latter. My time is now, I want this now and I’m ready now. I don’t have a “Plan B” per say because I truly do believe in what I do. Right now I am an Assistant Bursar at a 4-year college. Now some would call this a plan B but I don’t. Remember when I said I wasn’t naive? This is the career that fuels plan A does that makes sense? It’s kind of cool because I have always been a nerd. I have been saying that since my song “Newbian King”. I get to challenge myself mentally with my 9-5 and it’s awesome! I need that believe it or not. I expand knowledge which also helps my writing lyrics; it’s so symbiotic. Plus this business cost money, lots of it. A paycheck helps!

Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
I've been in love with music ever since I can remember. My mother used to tape music videos from BET on VHS for my sister and me. We would learn the choreography to all of the songs. Aaliyah was my absolute favorite, I just loved the way she carried herself and I felt as if her personality came through all of her music. That is where I learned to just be myself as an artist and a person. Once Destiny's Child hit the scene, my sister and I created a singing group called Cantaijous, a combination of our first names, Canei and Taija. My sister was lead and I would do background vocals. This was my first encounter with writing. The songs were cheesy but nevertheless it was the catalyst for songwriting. We eventually just ended up focusing on other things in life such as school and what not although I was in many talent shows performing Hip Hop dance. It was during my sophomore year of college when I started seeing artists like Nicki Minaj emerge onto the scene. I was never a strong singer so she made me realize that I could use my pen for rapping. I've been writing ever since.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
I just recently performed at Pittsburgh Pride as the LGBTQIA community is incredibly important to me. I was already excited because we were performing in the same festival as Jennifer Hudson but nothing prepared me for what took place during our performance. We were at the festival early to make sure we had time to set up so we watched a few performers before our set. Despite their attempts to engage the crowd people kept walking by and we didn’t understand why because these artists sounded amazing. I looked at my team and said "Ok guys this is going to be a tough crowd."So we go up to the stage and there are a few people around. We begin to perform and I witness people coming closer to the stage instead of walking by. I figured we would have a decent crowd, at least in front of the stage. It's my third song, I walk to my place toward the back of the stage, I turn around, and there are a sea of people. I wanted to cry but I had to continue performing of course. Craziest and best thing that's ever happened to me so far.
What has been the high point of your music path?
Pittsburgh Pride has been hands down.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
I like to be blocked off from the world when I write my music. I don't like listening to any new Hip Hop music because I want what I am creating to be authentic. It's easy for other people's style to seep into what you are writing sometimes so I avoid it all together. I let the beat carry me if I don't like the beat I'm pretty sure the bars will suffer.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
There are a couple of things. I think the biggest one would be the leeches/liars in the industry and trying your best not be taken advantage of. There are so many that it's hard to know who to trust and who not to. These are the promoters that charge for you to open up for a major artist knowing that charging is not necessary but you will see their untalented friend or family member on the same stage for free. It's the shows that pop up promising you will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to be discovered by A&R from a major record label but nothing ever comes of it besides your empty pockets. It’s the “Record labels” that you sign to and they either do nothing for you or they screw you over. I could go on and on but those are three examples that popped into my head. If you fall into one of these traps sometimes it's hard to recover from. You also can't speak your mind and bad mouth anybody because who’s to say that you might not be blackballed by them in some way, shape, or form. It’s tough navigating through all of that and trying to progress at the same time.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
I would love to share the stage with Ivy Queen. She is a Hispanic urban artist. She is such a boss and really holds her own in a truly male dominated genre. I mean who else is touching Ivy Queen in Urban Latin music??? Nadie that's who!
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
My rehearsals are usually late nights as it depends upon my team's availability so just imagine our energy levels after long days of work and school. Despite that fact, the rehearsals are high energy and super serious. My Creative Director/ Choreographer/Dancer Myles Jeh is on us at all times. If anything looks out of place he will call it out and we will fix it on the spot. My Dj, Dj Juice, is at every practice so we know exactly how we will sound on stage. Having him there allows us to make changes at the drop of a hat and it's awesome because ideas are always flowing. Tylor T is one of my background dancers and has been with me for a long time. He is a partner in owning a dance studio as well as a choreographer himself so he picks up choreography quickly and accurately. Because of this, we spend majority of our time being hyper-sensitive to perfecting everything. Those guys are my everything even when I am tired and want to just go to sleep.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
There is a song on the new project called "The Chill". It's a song about the passing of both my grandmother and aunt. They were from my mother's side of the family so I not only wanted to write something that would express the pain that I felt because of their passing but also the hurt I was feeling for my mom being in so much pain at the time. Every family member from her childhood was gone and it really put her into a state of loneliness for a while. She has myself, my sisters, and my cousins but we couldn't fill that void. The inability to help her in those moments hurt . My family is originally from Texas but there are so few that are in my hometown so I also made sure that the lyrics represented the loss that we all felt as tiny family. It definitely is one of my more layered pieces. I cried through the writing and recording process. Thank God I have a genuine musical relationship with my engineer and producer, J.Dilli, otherwise I would not have been able to really get into the music while recording.
What's coming up in the future?
My new project Heart on the Stage, #HOTS, will be out sometime this year and I'm super excited about it because my last solo project was released two years ago. My team and I have some really special things that we are working on. I can't give much detail but let's just say if all goes the way we plan we will definitely be expanding our musical presence. - BWH Music Group
Taija New is a talented and ambitious hip-hop artist from Springfield, MA. She first began making music her sophomore year at UMass in 2014. In 2016 she released two singles, “Capone” and “Newbian King” which garnished her the title “Up Next” by Hot 93.7, a premier radio station in Hartford, CT. New has a wide-variety of performance experience to her credentials from big festivals to hot nightclubs and rightfully so. “I Want It All” a single from her project 'Heart On The Stage' is just one great example of this dynamic artist's mass appeal.
"I Want It All" kicks off with a catchy synth progression. A bass line filters in leading to the first hook as the beat drops. From the second the beat drops, the song pulls you in, like a magnet, with its memorable hook, top-notch production and New’s strong vocals. Getting into the first verse, New spits with an undeniably sick flow that would rival those of prominent rappers today. Her bars are clever and well thought-out showing her intellect, creativity, drive and passion for her music. New’s song, “I Want It All” proves that she has it all with this radio-ready hit.
"I Want It All" is an unapologetic song about New's ideals, specifically relationships and equality. She knows she is at the top of her game and there's nothing wrong with that. She isn't an artist who is going to settle for anything but the best - musically, collaboratively and in what she gives out to her fans. “I want it all I want it all I want it/Selfish I know I'm entitled I'm worth it/You'll never find another like me I'm perfect.” Then in the verses she gets more in depth with bars like, “If he worthless to me I don't ever depend/Game strong everyday what the fuck I look like with a weak minded man to append.” New exudes a contagious confidence.
The cream always rises to the top and there is no doubt Taija New is on the rise. Her music is professional and infectious, she has an undeniable knack for writing great songs. With all the worthy praise she has already received, there is no doubt that much more is coming her way - her music will take her far. “I Want It All” is just one shining example of how Taija New is going to get it all. There is not one day that goes by that I am not reaching for more opportunities for myself and for my city. Springfield,Ma has no spotlight for music even though there is an insane movement here. I plan to make my city known for who we are as a people and less for the crime and violence that is displayed to the masses on the news.”
