"Song Premiere: Josh Finsel “The Drought”"

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Joshua Finsel’s song “The Drought” from his forthcoming album No Honey, which is due to be released on February 6th. No Honey was produced by D. Patrick with additional production and mixing by Mark Plati (David Bowie). It was mastered for digital and vinyl by Scott Hull. Engineering was performed by D. Patrick, Josh Finsel, Mark Plati, Steve Drizos, Doug Makofka, and Steven Eisenberg.

Musicians on “The Drought” are Joshua Finsel on acoustic guitar, vocals, and dobro; Ada Finsel on vocals and backing vocals; Mark Plati on fretless electric bass; D Patrick on drums; Christo Huntington on pedal steel; Quentin Fisher on mandolin; Brett Andrew on lead guitar; Jim Adkins on electric guitar; Doug Makofka on accordion; Bob Beach on harmonica; and Damian Calcagne on piano.

This song is Josh and his daughter Ada Finsel in vocal duet, performing a song that’s a dialogue between a boy and his mother about a drought. Anyone in communion with nature who has lived through a drought of any length immediately understands the deep pitted anxiety it produces, and Josh’s impetus to craft a song about drought is already set up for tone, and it carries that with excellence. As Josh put it, “it’s a conversation between a drought stricken boy and mother earth.” The songs start out slow and reflective with gentle strings and Josh’s raw vocals are soon mingled with Ada’s clear high tones, and the song has layer after layer of metaphor and meaning. It’s a song of hope, holding on, and bittersweet acceptance. “The drought will come to an end.” But not yet.

Discography

NO HONEY is the debut solo record by Joshua Finsel, scheduled to be released February 6th 2025 at the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe, PA at 7pm.

In the late winter of 2024 Josh teamed up with producer D Patrick to archive for posterity the songs that would become NO HONEY Through the gifted orchestration and arranging of D Patrick and the support of a slew of talented musicians and friends, the simple guitar and vocal collection became the elaborately orchestrated lush record, NO HONEY.

Featured on the record is David Bowie producer, music director, and bandmate, Mark Plati. Mark's contribution on bass is epic and his mastery of mixing at Alice's Restaurant in Nyc, make NO HONEY sonically rich and extra dimensional.

Lastly the mixes were given a final polishing by the legendary Scott Hull of Masterdisk at his Peekskill, Ny mastering studio.

Bio

Joshua Finsel has wandered the mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania for most of his life. Born and raised in the backwoods of the Poconos, his formative memories were forged in nature, under blue skies, near cold mountain streams, with family, friends, and love. Music found him early, on the tapes played by his mother and father, the Wild Elders, while creeping slowly down the long narrow dirt road to his family's cabin in a pickup truck.

He was a straight edge rocker by high school in the 90s, before becoming a mystical folk singer/songwriter/musician in a college town a few short years later. Josh spent some time strumming around out in Oregon for a few years before setting down roots back home and founding the bluegrass-inspired rock band Free Range Folk with friends in 2010 and Wild Elder Wine & Cider Co. in 2019.

Josh's versatile vocal and instrumental style flows from Western-inspired laments to psychedelia. His solo work, although collaborative, showcases his subtlety and depth. Joshua's music falls familiar on the ears, like the soundtrack to your dreams.
